Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has met Ubaid ur Rehman Nizamani, Islamabad’s ambassador in Kabul, to discuss regional developments and the situation in Afghanistan. Dar stressed the need to monitor events affecting peace and security.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry said on Thursday 3 September that developments concerning Pakistan were also discussed at the meeting.
The meeting comes as Islamabad voices concern over armed groups operating in Afghanistan. Its chief worry is Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad has repeatedly said thousands of TTP fighters are in Afghanistan and use its territory to train, organise and launch attacks inside Pakistan.
The UN Security Council has confirmed the presence of TTP members in parts of eastern and south-eastern Afghanistan, including Kunar, Nangarhar, Khost, Paktika and Paktia. The Taliban reject these reports.
