UK Envoy Highlights Men’s Role in Supporting Girls’ Education

Nearly five years after girls above sixth grade were barred from attending schools and universities, Richard Lindsay, the UK’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, says men’s support for girls’ and women’s right to education is vital to Afghanistan’s future.

A number of Kabul residents also emphasized the importance of providing educational opportunities for girls in the country and called for their return to classrooms.

Meanwhile, some girls deprived of education expressed concern about their uncertain future and urged the Taliban to allow them to return to schools and universities.

Maryam, a student, said: “Education is very important for girls because women are mothers, sisters, and wives in society. We need educated women who can raise well-educated children.”

Tayyaba, a university student, said: “If they want a developed, progressive, and educated society, I ask them to reopen the schools.”

This comes as the new academic year has begun in Afghanistan, yet the Islamic Emirate has so far made no announcement regarding the future of girls’ education in schools and universities.
