Putin Reportedly Approves Proposal to Recognize Taliban Government, Says Russian Envoy in Kabul

Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian Federation’s ambassador to Kabul, announced on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to officially recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

In a press briefing, he stated: “This decision was initiated by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and accepted by President Vladimir Putin. It reflects Russia’s genuine and serious intention to establish full relations with Afghanistan.”

The Russian ambassador’s comments come at a time when no permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has officially recognized the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
