The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has called on donor countries to continue providing critical support to the Afghan people.
In a statement released on Monday, April 7, UNAMA stated that contributions from donors enable the United Nations to achieve tangible results in life-saving humanitarian assistance and to strengthen the delivery of essential services to the people of Afghanistan including women and girls.
This appeal comes at a time when poverty in Afghanistan has sharply increased. According to the United Nations, 22.9 million out of the country’s 35 million population are currently in need of urgent assistance.
This week, representatives of donor countries and financial institutions are scheduled to meet in Istanbul, Turkey, at a gathering titled the “Afghanistan Coordination Group.” In addition to donor country representatives, UNAMA officials will also attend the meeting.
UNAMA also announced that the 2024 United Nations Annual Report on Afghanistan will be released in conjunction with the Afghanistan Coordination Group meeting in Istanbul.
