Iranian military officials have announced that over the next three years the country plans to completely seal and control all 900 kilometers of its border with Afghanistan using advanced equipment and smart technologies.
Amir Kioumars Heydari, commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces, stated that 55 kilometers of the shared border with Afghanistan have already been walled off.
Heydari explained: “We are working to establish a border barrier at the cutting edge of technology for the sacred Islamic Republic. This is not just a four-meter-high wall it is a wall equipped with advanced weapons and technology designed to intelligently create deterrent obstacles.”
However, some political and military analysts warn that such unilateral actions, rather than enhancing security, could cast a shadow over relations between the two countries.
Hakim Anwari, a political analyst, said: “Barriers and fences have never preserved governments. Rather, good relations with one’s people and neighboring countries are the true guarantors of lasting security.”
The Taliban has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
