Six months after the arrest of an elderly British couple in Afghanistan, their family has expressed concern about their fate and health condition.
The couple’s son says it has been over six weeks since the last contact with his parents and he has no information about their current situation.
Jonathan Reynolds, the couple’s son, said that the last time he had spoken with his parents was on June 15, which was six weeks earlier. He added that two weeks ago, he had been confident they were alive, but now they were in a place where it was impossible to know what was happening. He questioned how he would find out if they were no longer alive and who would be responsible for informing him, noting that “the Taliban” had never contacted him and he did not know who would.
Earlier, Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister, stated that all the rights of the British couple detained by the Taliban are preserved and that they are in contact with their family.
The acting foreign minister also said efforts to release the couple are ongoing, but according to him, the process of their release is not yet complete.
The family of a British couple in their seventies who have been detained in Afghanistan have expressed fears for their health after a court appearance was delayed.
Peter Reynolds, 79, and his wife Barbie, 75, were arrested on 1 February while returning to their home in Bamiyan province.
