Zamari Kamgar, an Afghan businessman and head of the private airline Kam Air, has donated $100,000 USD in cash to support Afghan migrants recently deported from Iran to Herat.
Sources close to Mr. Kamgar say the funds are intended to address the urgent needs of returnees, including food, shelter, and basic services. The details of how the aid will be distributed and which organizations will manage the process have not yet been clarified.
In recent weeks, the number of Afghan deportees from Iran has increased significantly, with thousands—including women and children—returning under harsh economic and social conditions. Many of them are now stranded in border regions or western Afghan cities like Herat, facing acute shortages of shelter, food, and essential services.
Previously, several prominent Afghan business figures, including Ehsanullah Bayat, Chairman of Afghan Wireless, and Mirwais Azizi, head of the Azizi Group, had pledged assistance. Azizi had announced a donation of one billion Afghanis, while Bayat spoke of upcoming support initiatives. However, Kamgar’s donation is the first to be physically delivered to Herat.
The move has been welcomed by local communities and civil society organizations, though some observers have called for greater transparency and oversight in the distribution of aid.
