Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Pakistan, expressed regret over the deprivation of Afghanistan’s girls from education during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum and simultaneously announced the establishment of the country’s first specialized university for artificial intelligence in Lahore.
During her speech at the international Antalya Forum, Maryam Nawaz referred to the educational situation in Afghanistan, describing the denial of girls’ right to education as deeply regrettable. She emphasized that education is the most fundamental tool for empowering communities and that no one should be deprived of it.
Alongside these remarks, Ms. Nawaz announced that the Punjab government has launched the first university dedicated to artificial intelligence in Lahore. She believes this institution will significantly transform the future of education in Pakistan.
The Chief Minister added that this university is part of a set of innovative initiatives designed to reconstruct traditional educational models and respond to the demands of the 21st century. She noted that such measures represent a serious step toward institutionalizing advanced sciences and improving the quality of education across the country.
Maryam Nawaz also unveiled a new project called the “Nawaz Sharif Internet City,” presenting it as a symbol of Pakistan’s digital future.
Since the return of the Taliban to power, Afghanistan’s girls have been barred from continuing their education at secondary schools, high schools, and universities. This ban has sparked widespread international condemnation.
Meanwhile, regional countries like Pakistan are striving to align with global scientific developments through investments in modern technology and education. The establishment of specialized universities, including those focused on artificial intelligence, is considered a key part of this development-oriented strategy.
The contrast between educational restrictions in Afghanistan and progressive steps in Pakistan highlights the importance of policy choices in shaping the future of societies. While one country limits opportunities for half its population, the other is investing in the future through science and innovation.
Efforts such as the founding of the AI university in Lahore reflect a broader vision to position Pakistan as a leader in emerging technologies. It also underscores the role that inclusive and forward-looking educational policies can play in driving national progress and international cooperation.
